The name “shubi” derives from the imagery of a majestic deer leading its herd by swaying its tail, symbolizing leadership. Monks wielding the shubi assume the role of guides, leading fellow monks during ceremonies. While historical depictions of the shubi exist in Dunhuang Mogao Cave murals from the 8th to 11th centuries, featuring the renowned monk Xuanzang as Tripitaka, and in the Eigakyo sutra housed at Jofun Rendaiji Temple from the 8th century, authentic examples of the shubi in Japan are rare.
Upon receiving the commission, research revealed materials specified for the shubi in a Tang Dynasty-translated sutra called “Root Explanation of Various Abhidharma Matters.” Progressing with the production in line with the sutra’s guidance, we collaborated closely with Toshodaiji Temple to determine suitable materials and refine the shubi’s form for ceremonial use.
We perceive the shubi crafted for Toshodaiji Temple as a testament to their profound respect for monastic precepts.
