The Jizo Bodhisattva statue represents a Buddhist deity tasked with saving all beings until the future arrival of Maitreya Bodhisattva after Shakyamuni Buddha’s passing.

At Yakuo-ji Temple, a majestic ginkgo tree graces the surroundings, adorned with blooming flowers throughout the seasons, drawing visitors of all ages daily. During the statue’s creation, the head priest’s sole desire was to embody a gentle atmosphere, appealing to visitors of all ages and genders.”

After discussions with the head priest and members of the temple community, it was determined that the Jizo Bodhisattva statue should be depicted in a posture symbolizing a welcoming gesture towards visitors. Furthermore, carving clouds beneath the lotus pedestal was deemed essential to convey the sense of arrival at this sacred moment.

One notable characteristic of Jizo Bodhisattva is the staff held in the right hand, known as a “shubijo.” Traditionally used by monks, the shubijo produces sound through its dangling rings, serving as a ritual instrument. Consequently, it was decided that the shubijo head must be crafted from metal to faithfully replicate its function. The jewel held in the left hand is believed to grant wishes and offer protection from misfortune, thus it was adorned in indigo blue as described in ancient texts. Each element of the statue’s design was carefully crafted to capture the essence of Jizo Bodhisattva’s original role.

With the support of the temple and its community, I am pleased to have crafted a Buddha statue that extends solace to numerous individuals.
